J.R. Tolkien: Post-Its Mural by darkwater-pirate J.R. Tolkien: Post-Its Mural by darkwater-pirate
From bottom clockwise: The original picture of J.R. Tolkien (reversed), pallet grid, the finished mural, and a small thumbnail to show scale. It only took us around 3 hours to complete the mural.

This was a Graphic Arts class group project, we were allowed to only use a pallet of up to 10 different post-it colors, we've used nine colors (the white was the hardest to find!) We decided on a portrait of J.R Tolkien because of the location of the window facing Mt. Pilchuck and the forests beyond the industrial city of Everett, of which nature and technology was a common theme in Tolkien's writings. That, and we all agreed that J.R. Tolkien (and his pipe) is awesome in general :D

Since this has been up, I've scribbled several quotes from his books and caricatures of his characters all over the notes in the hope that more Tolkien fans would follow suite.

Thanks! It was actually a class project, other groups focused on more local and business heroes (Like Apollo Ahnton Ohno and the guy who founded Boeing company)

There are colors on here that I didn't even know they used for post-its. XD
Was there some kind of special post-it place you went to to get these?

Staples and Office Depot mostly! Some of the post-its (like the white) only came in very small quantities in multi-colored packs of 200. There's even black post-its as well, but only by special order.

Where do you live? Cuz the Staples and Office Depot near me don't carry these magnificent colors. XD
Come to think of it, I've never seen white post-its. :o

Oh wow, that's wonderful! <3 What a lovely tribute to an amazing author. n-n I should show this to my professor - I'm taking a class called "Tolkien and Medieval Roots", all about how he was inspired by ancient Anglo-Saxon and medieval writings like Beowulf and other epics... Actually I'm writing a paper right now on the concept of fate and how its presentation in Beowulf had major influences on The Lord of the Rings. :3 Pretty damn fascinating, if yer into that sort of thing.

YAY! Well done! n__n

>D It is pretty awesome! Although we're studying far less actual fairy tales and a lot more, like. Epics and whatnot. Battles and the like. I WISH there were more fairy-tale elements involved - but I'll take it! This is the first class of its kind I've ever had - ye know, where it's something I actually GIVE a damn about. x3

Too many for my small brain and math skills to comprehend! But I know we used around $50 in post-its D:
